Define what the furniture must achieve

Begin with function. A dining table may need to seat ten people while leaving enough chair clearance. A server may need to conceal appliances, store crockery and provide a serving surface. A couch may require a specific daybed orientation, seat depth or modular layout.

Write down the non-negotiable requirements before focusing on style. This helps prevent attractive details from distracting from the way the piece must perform.

Collect useful inspiration

Reference images are helpful when they show the overall design language, proportions, timber tone or upholstery feeling you prefer. They do not need to match perfectly. Several images can be combined into one clear direction.

Also include photographs of the room and the furniture that will remain. This allows the new design to relate to the existing architecture, flooring, lighting and colour palette.

Provide accurate measurements

Measure the available wall or floor area, but also record doors, windows, skirtings, plug points and circulation routes. For tables, allow space for chairs to pull out. For sofas, consider coffee-table clearance and access to curtains. For cabinets, check door swings and ceiling height.

Delivery access matters as well. Measure entrance doors, passages, stairs and lifts where the piece is large or cannot be disassembled.

Develop the quotation and specification

The quotation should reflect the approved scope, dimensions, materials, finish and major design details. Where options affect price, they should be separated clearly so that the client can make an informed decision.

A technical specification or drawing may be required for complex designs. This is particularly important when orientation, fitted dimensions, moving parts or several materials must align precisely.

Confirm materials and finishes

Solid Oak, Ash and Kiaat offer different grain patterns, natural colours and visual weight. Upholstery can be selected from suitable fabric or genuine-leather options. Metal finishes, hardware and sealants should be chosen to support the overall interior.

View physical samples where possible and remember that natural materials vary. A sample represents the general colour and finish, not an identical copy of every board or hide.

Approve the final design before manufacturing

Final approval should cover dimensions, orientation, storage arrangement, leg position, edge detail, upholstery, hardware and finish. Changes made after production has started can affect cost, lead time and construction.

Take time at this stage. A clear approval gives the workshop a reliable instruction and protects the design intent.

Manufacturing and project communication

Once production begins, the piece moves through material preparation, joinery, assembly, sanding, metalwork, upholstery and finishing as required. Different designs follow different sequences, and natural drying or curing time may be necessary between stages.

Lead times should be treated as estimates based on the approved scope. Custom work requires care, and unexpected material or technical issues may need to be resolved properly rather than rushed.

Delivery and installation

Before delivery, confirm the destination, access, placement and any installation requirements. The area should be clear and ready to receive the furniture. Large or fragile pieces may need additional handling, protection or assembly on site.

Inspect the piece after placement and keep the supplied care information for the selected timber, upholstery and finish.
